How to Fix a Door Knob Hole That Is Too Big

You’ve just bought your first home, and you’re about to move in. You open the door, but you really don’t like the door knob. You ask your dad for advice, and he tells you he has an old door knob in the garage that you can have.

Unfortunately the door knob is not the same size as the hole in your door. The knob has the diameter of 6 inches, but the hole is 8 inches.

You have two options to fix a door knob hole that’s too big: you can either buy a new larger door knob that fits in the hole, or you can go to the hardware store and buy a wood filler to reduce the hole for your existing door knob.

When choosing a doorknob for your home, you should take into account the condition of your house, the style of your home, and the style of your decor.

A doorknob that you like may not fit the style of your home, or it may be a different style than the rest of your home.

The placement of your doorknobs is also important, as some people may not be able to reach doorknobs placed too high.

Door knobs are one of the most frequently used parts of the house, but most people don’t realize how important they are until they have to use one that’s not working.

But even if you don’t live in a home with broken door knobs, you may be interested in extending the life of your existing hardware.

Are you having problems with a door knob hole being too big? I’ll show you how to fix it.

Why the door knob hole is too big

Whether you are a homeowner, home renter, contractor, or real estate agent, chances are you’ve come across a door knob hole that is too big.

This is a common problem in door knobs because the screws that hold the knob to the door pullout or back out, causing the hole to get bigger.

This causes the door to no longer close properly and the knob to become loose.

There are many reasons a door knob hole may be too big for the knob to fit snugly into.

It could be that the hole is uneven where you need to drill, the wood may be warped, the door may have been previously damaged, or the door knob may even be just too small.

Regardless of the reason for the problem, there is a way to fix it.

The key is to get the hole in the right shape before you start any drilling.

What tools are needed to fix a big door knob’s hole?

As homeowners and home-renovators, we all want to have that “perfect” house.

After all, who doesn’t want to have that home that everybody else admires?

But, as they say, perfect is the enemy of the good.

Such is the case with the door you need to repair when the doorknob hole is too large to fit a door knob.

Rather than have a handyman come sit and stare at the hole for a week, while he drinks coffee, smokes, and tries to figure out what to do, you can fix the door yourself with items you can find at your local hardware store.

A screwdriver, wood filler, a level, a hammer and a drill with a Phillips-head bit are what you need.

Steps to fix a hole that’s too big for the door knob

If you’ve just moved into a new house, but the hole that was cut in the door for the previous owner’s door knob is much too large and won’t allow you to install a new one, there are a few things you can do to fix it.

  • First, use a locking mechanism to secure the door firmly in place to avoid swinging back and forth
  • Remove the door knob from the door. A door knob is attached to the door using screws that are usually under the decorative cap. If the decorative cap is missing, find the screws on the back side of the door, and loosen them using the screwdriver.
  • Once the screws are removed, you can take out the lock, leaving you with the hole in the door.
  • Next, you’ll want to sand down the hole so that the surrounding wood is smooth and even.
  • To do this, you can use a wire brush attachment on a drill.
  • Then, mix up some wood filler so that it is slightly runny and apply it to the hole.
  • You can use a paint brush to spread the filler into the hole, making sure that it is a uniform thickness.
  • After the filler has dried, sand it down with a sanding block to even it out
  • Ensure that the door hole is at the same height as the door knob
  • Trim the door knob’s mounting bracket if needed
  • Attach the door knob

How to choose the correct door knob

Choosing the right door knob for your home is one of the most important decisions you can make when it comes to your home’s aesthetics.

There are many reasons why it is important to have on hand the correct door knob for every door.

While the correct door knob can help to beautify an otherwise unattractive door, it can also help to improve the security of the entire home.

If you are planning on selling your house, the right door knobs will help your house sell faster, and for a better price.

Here are some tips and tricks for choosing the right door knobs for your home:

1. Size

The first thing to consider when trying to pick the correct door knob is the door size itself. The knob must be able to fit and support pulling and closing the door.

2. Material

Before you can choose a door knob, you must first know whether the door is made out of metal, wood, or glass.

Wood is a popular choice because it is aesthetically pleasing, but it is susceptible to water damage and is very easily damaged.

A door knob that is unpainted wood may look attractive, but it can be slippery and difficult to hold onto in wet conditions.

Metal door knobs are the most durable. They are less attractive but are able to hold up in almost any condition.

A door knob made of glass may not look as decorative as other options, but it is likely to be more functional too.

3. Style of your home

Next, you have to consider what the style of your home is

For a Victorian house for example, you will probably want to choose a knob that is more traditional.

On the other hand, if your house is more contemporary, you can choose from a large variety of modern door knobs.
